TEXARKANA "HEAT" WINS THE SHREVEPORT FIREFIGHTERS' 2008 MDA SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

On May 10, 2008, the Texarkana Heat Softball team participated in the Shreveport Firefighters' 2008 MDA Softball Tournament. Defeating teams from Shreveport, Baton Rouge, and Oklahoma City Fire Departments, the "Heat" brought home to Texarkana the coveted 1st place prize.

Congratulations to the entire 2008 Texarkana Heat Softball team for their effort in representing and supporting Texarkana, IAFF Local 502, and the Muscular Distrophy Association.

On behalf of everyone here in Shreveport, we would like to thank the members of Texarkana Heat and their families for coming to Shreveport and participating in and winning the 2008 Shreveport Firefighters MDA Softball Tournament. Congratulations to the entire team on their outstanding play and sportsmanship. It was truly a pleasure getting to play against and getting to know a few of you, and we are all looking forward to meeting and playing again. Lightning Strike On Winwood

Friday April 4th, A-crew was dispatched to a possible structure fire at 5602 Winwood. Upon arrival, T-5 extinguished a small fire at the gas meter where the supply line comes out of the ground. Reliant was dispatched because of a natural gas smell. No occupants were at home. The electric meter was found to be not turning. The houses on either side did not have electricity either. We could not see any smoke inside the house.

The occupant finally arrived. We went in the home and found the circuit breaker for the dishwasher tripped. The occupant was walking around his home and noticed that the black plastic box that covers his cable connections was in his neighbor's yard. His phone line appeared charred also. He went in the back yard and noticed a few boards off his fence and some holes in the ground. That was from the lightning. One hole was at least 3' deep.

In one photograph that I took, my back is about 10' away from the ground mounted electric transformer in the neighbor's yard. From the holes to the house is approximately 30'. Lightning struck the tree, went down the roots, blew multiple holes in the ground, rode to the house on the electric line, and somehow got on the phone, cable and gas lines. It made a hole in the bottom of the gas meter. On the roof photograph, zoom in and you will find pieces of grass that came from the hole by the tree.

Texarkana, Texas' Local 367 Opens Website

Scott Robertson of the Texarkana, Texas Fire Department sent us an email the other day to announce the opening of Texarkana, Texas' IAFF Local 367's new website. They want everyone to see it, so they've invited us to check it out. The website looks very professional and promises to be an excellent information source for their membership.

The majority of the website is for registered users only. I haven't registered, so I'm not sure what resources will be available for those who do.

GENTLEMAN & MEMBERS,

I just got off the phone with a gentleman that sells Insurance suppliments( Like AFLAC USAble, etc) to IAFF locals only. I wil find out what other insurance he carries, and if he has Medical. He has North Little Rock, Jacksonville, Cabot, and many other Depts I forgot. He was telling me about how he could save us money on our insurance, besides what we are paying with USAble. This is a Union members only plan. I told him about how much our USAble is costing, He stated he could beat that hands down. I am not very savy on this insurance, however, he sounded like he had a good product that might be worth our while. He will come by to talk to me Wednesday. I will get Jeff involved in this also. I would like to have others take a look at this. I will post the information when I get it. Be careful, and most of all be safe. Sec "P"

MDA SOFTBALL

On May 10th - 11th 2008, Shreveport Firefighters Local 514 invites you to participate in a Public Safety, Muscular Dystrophy Association Softball tournament. This tournament is open to Fire Departments, Police Departments, Sheriff's Departments, and EMS Providers. The tournament will be played under ASA rules, all participants shall be directly affiliated with a Public Safety agency. Player ID's are subject to review.

First Game will be at 09:00 at Southern Hills Recreation Complex, make sure your team is there and ready to play.
If you would like to register for the Public Safety MDA Softball Tournament, you may do so by filling out the following information and sending a check or money order for $300.00 made payable to IAFF Local 514 MDA Softball, 7009 St Vincent Ave Shreveport Louisiana 71106. All entries are NON REFUNDABLE. Registration is due no later than April 25, 2008. The tournament will be double elimination. Call Todd Olague for Additional Information: (318) 286-5805.
